Shortly after Justin and I met, our lives took the fast track into our forever together. He helped me move out of my college apartment in San Francisco and into his parents’ home with him. I worked and he attended his prerequisite science classes in preparation for dental school, and several months later, we were married on the beach where he proposed. Our first son was born, and we prepared to move into our first apartment together. We scraped together hand-me-down items from gracious family members; a couch, a kitchen table, a crib and a bed for us. Most of these things came with us and packed nicely into that little moving van that took us across the country. Life, as complicated as it was with school and babies and marriage and a move on top of everything, seemed so much simpler than it does today.
It’s a strange feeling to truly exist here on the flip side of dental school. It felt like we were at the base of Kilimanjaro, with a pathway of stairs climbing into the clouds that our little backpacks and lifetimes behind us wouldn’t nearly sustain as we ascended. The story of the evolution of our lives can really be told within the four walls of the homes that we keep though, and I feel my feet firmly planted in the life that truly feels like the elementary school age of our marriage and family. We rent a lovely home in the town where Justin’s dental practice is. We have a new couch and a new coffee table, the kids have new beds and mattresses and room furniture. We just ordered our first (second, technically, but that’s a long story) brand new vehicle ever, and while there are still really lovely and welcomed pieces in our lives that were passed down to us, we are on steadily on our path into molding and forming the framing for our lives and raising our children.
With that all said, things do not represent our lives but there are definitely things that are necessary for raising a family. Being deliberate about choosing pieces that I not only trust but are also aligned with the quality and aesthetic I am working towards style-wise has been a bit of a challenge for me, but something that I’ve really invested myself in. I have made an effort to adopt an interior design mind (which I certainly was not born with), envisioning the spaces I want to encase these memories of raising our family within. For our master bedroom, I really wanted clean lines, airy spaces and plenty of life in the form of trailing greenery, succulents and air-plants. I am conscious of bringing in bright, light colors and soft textures, and most of all I wanted the place where we sleep to be as comfortable and supportive as possible. Justin and I chose a Cal-King sized Naturepedic EOS mattress with either side customized to our preference with the EOS Comfort Layers (he likes a firmer mattress, I prefer a much softer, cloud-like sleeping space).
This mattress is organic and hypo-allergenic, plus it’s easy to change sides back and forth when we want. For instance, we swapped the mattress pieces when Evangeline was born, so that she could be closer to me but not right next to our bedroom door, which is often revolving throughout the night with Beau and Zoe.
Bed frame, side tables, and bedding are from Serena & Lily. Hanging pots are from Anthropologie.
Jack and Beau, Zoe and Evangeline all have the Naturepedic organic mattresses as well, and that’s a decision I was really comfortable and happy making for all of us. I feel safe knowing the materials on which we will dedicate much of our restorative hours to are not only earth-friendly but health conscious, too. Evvie’s crib mattress is sealed, seamless and waterproof, soft and yet very supportive at the same time.
Crib is Bratt Decor. Crib bedding is Restoration Hardware.
The first couple of years out of dental school sort of feel like the “fourth trimester” of our lives. We are getting used to having a real schedule and even an income to budget the flow of raising our family as well as maintaining each of our careers. There’s so much big life stuff going on, and navigating the waters is a day-to-day, ever changing course and it’s all I can do to try to keep the basics of this ship maintained within. It’s been a really interesting and intense learning experience, one that I’m obviously very grateful and thankful for those in our lives that have made this process smoother and easier for our family. It’s a really awesome feeling to be able to make some of the more tangible decisions for filling out our family’s home base, while feeling comfortable and confident in those choices.
