Generally when the summer months start to wind down and shift gears from long, relaxing hours into the more geared up and structured mentality for back-to-school, this is the time we all begin to get a little bit frazzled and frayed at the edges. We’ve gotten our travels in, our vacations with family and visits with friends, we’ve run the gamut on camps of all kinds and creative activities hang on the walls waiting for new school work to replace them. The pool days, beach days, long afternoons playing “cops and robbers” and even rides at the Boardwalk have lost the initial zest that carried them happily through until August.
It’s here in these last, hot and boring hours of the long summer that we often look for, and find the companionship and family time that we so desperately long for during the hectic weeks of the school season. That unscheduled and otherwise untailored time that sits and begs to be filled with impromptu late summer bbqs, neighborhood block parties and hopscotch championships is what I really look forward to, and it never fails to catch me off guard and unprepared. I have laundry that needs to be done and shopping for everyday necessities that I’m days behind on, but that sense of impulsive activities with my family is what some of our best stories are made of. As expected, these are the times when I’ve spent the majority of the day thinking that we weren’t going anywhere, and therefore didn’t prepare well by charging my phone and camera battery. I keep the OtterBox Resurgence case on my phone specifically for times like these, when I want to remember the details and be able to snap a few photos.
Last night, after we spent the morning swimming at our local club with picnics under the trees of packed peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, we made the last minute decision to grab our boogie boards, wet suits and sand toys and headed down to the beach for an evening diving in the waves seaside. Dinner wasn’t made or remotely planned for, so we made a reservation at the Crows Nest before setting up camp by the lifeguard station. The water has been so warm lately that there was very little to no hesitation for any of the kids and they jumped right in and proceeded to catch some of the greatest waves and biggest smiles ever. I was able to catch all of these moments my phone camera, thanks to the extra battery life that I charged up with the OtterBox Resurgence case.
That night we went to bed much later than usual. We stayed out after dinner and treated ourselves to ice cream cones- Evvie’s first taste ever. The late sun coupled with sandy toes and sticky fingers, full bellies and faces tired from laughing made for the perfect, quintessential late summer day that we all love so much, and I have some of those moments documented to show them when they’re grown.
